Is Concrete Window Sills in Ireland Worth the Investment for Homeowners? | Aluminium Cills Ireland

Is Concrete Window Sills in Ireland Worth the Investment for Homeowners?

For decades, precast concrete window sills have been the default choice for Irish homebuilders. They are cheap, heavy, and readily available. However, as building regulations tighten and energy costs remain high, we must ask if concrete is still worth the investment.

No. While concrete window sills are inexpensive initially, they are no longer a smart investment for modern, energy-efficient Irish homes. Concrete is highly conductive, creating severe thermal bridges (cold paths) that cause heat loss, internal mould growth, and plaster cracking over time.

The Drawbacks of Concrete Window Sills

  • Severe Thermal Bridging: Concrete is a dense material that conducts heat rapidly. A solid concrete sill passes directly from the cold outside air to the warm inside structure, drawing heat out of your rooms. This leads to cold spots on your internal plasterboard, resulting in condensation and mould growth.
  • Water Retention and Frost Cracking: Concrete is slightly porous. During wet Irish winters, concrete absorbs water. When temperatures drop below freezing, this water expands inside the concrete, leading to hairline cracks and eventual structural spalling.
  • Heavy Weight: Concrete sills weigh between 40kg and 120kg. Moving them requires heavy lifting gear, increasing installation labor costs and risk on site.
  • High Maintenance: To keep concrete sills looking clean, they must be painted regularly. Failing to paint them leads to water staining and unsightly green moss growth.

The Modern Alternative: Insulated Aluminium Cills

Modern architects and EWI specifiers in Dublin, Cork, and Galway are choosing custom-fabricated 2mm marine-grade aluminium cills. These feature thermal break gaskets to isolate the cold exterior, can be insulated underneath, weigh a fraction of concrete, and are finished with a lifetime Qualicoat powder-coated finish that never needs painting.
