A parapet capping is the aluminium or metal cover fixed to the top of a parapet wall or boundary wall. Its job is to stop water entering the wall from above and to shed water cleanly to one or both sides.
Without a capping, a parapet wall is exposed at its highest and most vulnerable point. Water enters the mortar joints at the top, freezes in winter, expands, and breaks the masonry down from the inside. In Ireland, this is not a slow process.
You need a parapet capping on any wall where the top surface is exposed to rainfall and cannot be fully protected by the structure above it.
Common situations include:
Flat roof perimeters where the parapet wall rises above the roof membrane. The capping protects the wall head and also forms part of the roof edge detail, directing water back onto the roof rather than into the wall cavity.
Boundary walls and garden walls where no coping stone is used. A powder-coated aluminium capping is more durable than a mortar-bedded coping, arrives on site in days, and does not require the kerb or overhang detail to be built into the brickwork.
EWI and rendered facades where the parapet is part of the insulated envelope. A secret-fix aluminium capping sits over the render finish with no exposed fixings, giving a clean line at the top of the elevation.
Secret fix cappings use a continuous fixing bar that sits on the wall head. The capping clips over it from above. There are no visible screw heads on the face of the capping. This is the standard specification on new builds and commercial projects.
Face fix cappings are screw-fixed directly through the cap. They are faster to install and suitable for boundary walls where the fixing detail is not visible or does not matter aesthetically.
Aluminium cappings do not rust, do not need painting, and do not crack or spall in frost. Powder coat finish in any RAL colour means the capping can match window frames, fascias, or facade colours exactly.
Lead and zinc cappings are alternatives but they are heavier, more expensive, and increasingly difficult to source. Aluminium is the standard for good reason.
Fabricator.ie manufactures parapet cappings to your exact wall width and length, in secret fix or face fix profiles, powder coated in your chosen RAL colour. Order through the platform with a three to five day turnaround and delivery anywhere in Ireland.
