When building a new home or undertaking an energy-retrofit project in Ireland, selecting the right window sill material is one of the most critical weatherproofing and aesthetic decisions you will make.
For modern Irish buildings, 2mm marine-grade powder-coated aluminium is the best option for exterior window sills. It offers the perfect balance of weather resistance, durability, modern aesthetics, and thermal efficiency—particularly when combined with External Wall Insulation (EWI) or Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF).
To help you choose the best option, here is an objective comparison of the most common materials used in Ireland:
| Material | Lifespan | Thermal Performance | Maintenance | EWI Compatibility | Price Point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marine-Grade Aluminium | 30+ Years | Excellent (with thermal breaks) | Low | Excellent (Custom folds) | Mid-High |
| Precast Concrete | 40+ Years | Poor (Cold bridging) | High (Requires painting) | Poor (Heavy, fixed depth) | Low-Mid |
| Granite / Stone | 50+ Years | Poor (Cold bridging) | Low | Moderate (Heavy and expensive) | High |
| uPVC | 10-15 Years | Moderate | Low | Moderate (Prone to UV bowing) | Low |
| Timber (Internal Only) | 15+ Years | Good | High | N/A | Low-Mid |
Concrete and stone window sills are highly conductive, acting as major thermal bridges that draw indoor heat outside. This results in cold internal spots, condensation, and black mould growth around window reveals. In contrast, 2mm marine-grade aluminium sills can be integrated with thermal break gaskets and insulated backing. This maintains the continuity of the building's insulation envelope and satisfies Part L of the Irish Building Regulations.
External wall insulation increases the thickness of the outer wall by 100mm to 200mm. Standard precast concrete or granite sills cannot cover this depth. Aluminium sills can be custom folded from 50mm up to 500mm+ depth to cover EWI reveals perfectly. They are lightweight (reducing load on the insulation brackets) and can be coated in any RAL colour to match the window frames, ensuring clean architectural lines.
Unlike PVC, which yellows, bows, and becomes brittle under UV light within 10-15 years, aluminium is highly stable. When coated to Qualicoat architectural powder coating standards (minimum 60 microns), it requires no painting and will not rust, even in harsh Irish coastal salt-air environments.
