When specifying metal flashings, window cills, and parapet cappings, contractors are often tempted to shave costs by choosing thinner gauges (like 1.2mm or 1.5mm) or standard-grade alloys.
At Fabricator.ie, we fabricate exclusively from 2mm marine-grade aluminium (typically Grade 5005 or 1050). In this article, we explain why this specification is the absolute minimum standard for any project in Ireland.
Ireland is an island, and almost no part of the country is completely free from coastal air influence. Marine-grade aluminium contains magnesium (specifically Grade 5005), which provides exceptional resistance to alkaline and salt-mist corrosion.
Standard aluminium alloys will rapidly oxidize, develop white rust, and bubble beneath the powder-coated paint layer when exposed to salt-laden air. Marine-grade alloy, when pre-treated and powder-coated correctly, maintains its structural integrity and finish for 25 to 40 years, even in coastal environments like Dublin Bay, Cork Harbour, or the Atlantic seaboard.
Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes. A 3-meter aluminium cill will expand by several millimetres between a freezing winter night and a hot summer afternoon.
Window cills and low-level flashings are vulnerable to impact. During installation, tools can drop on them. In service, window cleaners place ladders on them, children step on them, and footballs hit them.
Thinner aluminium will dent easily, cracking the powder-coated paint and exposing the metal beneath. A 2mm thick cill has the rigidity to absorb everyday impacts without denting or deforming, protecting your investment.
Architectural specifications often require welded corners or integrated stop-ends. Welding thin sheets of aluminium (under 1.5mm) is extremely difficult and prone to burning through.
A 2mm gauge allows our TIG-welding specialists to create deep, structurally sound welds. These welds are then dressed flat and polished prior to powder coating, resulting in a seamless, single-piece corner that is completely watertight.
Specifying 2mm marine-grade aluminium is not about over-engineering; it is about building for the Irish climate. It ensures that the window cills and parapet cappings you install today will look and perform exactly the same in thirty years' time.
All custom orders are built to these precise standards.
